Thought you may have mentioned Uzzah. It didn't seem fair that God struck him down even though he was only trying to help, but I know he wasn't authorized to touch the ark. It just seems sad like so many stories of the old testament. Thank the Lord for Jesus and mercy and grace.

That's how I felt too when I read about Uzzah's death. He reached out and took hold of the ark of God because the oxen stumbled.

2Samuel 6:6

6 When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. 7 The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God.

I suppose Uzzah disobeyed God's command. There are many stories and incidents in the OT where people's disobedience to God has been met with punishments from God which in our minds are harsh. At times it is hard for me to comprehend this. Thank God the NT has shown God with mercy through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thank you Nancy for your post. I was hesitant at first to post my feelings about Uzzah's death.

I think what God demonstrated through striking Uzzah down and his death is to show that His instruction and details as laid out in Exodus and Numbers about the right way of handling and transporting the ark from place to place must be followed because the ark was holy and was set apart to God. Uzzah meant good to take hold of the ark while oxen stumbled; however, Uzzah's action (and death) could have been avoided if David had followed the right way to transport the ark. After Uzzah's death, David saw God's wrath and was afraid of the Lord that day, and consequently he decided not to cart the ark to the City of David.

This reminded me of how often I acted like David to not follow God's instruction in my life, and I was afraid of the Lord too. I am glad I can come to Jesus directly everyday to confess my sins and ask for Lord's mercy and forgiveness. Thank Jesus for forgiving my sins and giving me an eternal life.
